LA JOLLA, Calif. --
Senior utility Paige Virgil led the Aggie scoreboard with a total of five goals over the span of two games on the first day of the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon. No. 10 UC Davis got a first-game 11-10 victory over No. 19(t) LMU, but suffered a second-game 14-5 loss against No. 6 Arizona State. The Aggies remain even with a 5-5 overall record.

In the game against LMU, No. 10 UC Davis scored their first goal within the first minute of the first quarter, thanks to senior center Greta Kohlmoos; however, the Lions ended the first quarter with a one-point lead over the Aggies.

The remainder of the game remained neck-and-neck as the teams tied up the score after both the second quarter and the fourth quarter, and thus forcing the temporary 9-9 match into overtime.

Kohlmoos scored the first of two Aggie overtime goals, while senior utility Carla Tocchini scored the second goal to make it an 11-9 game. LMU's Morgan Molloy pushed through to score a goal for the Lions with six-seconds left on the clock, but the last-second clutch play was not enough to take away the Aggies' 11-10 victory.

After the first-game win, UC Davis was assigned to play in the 12th game of the tournament against No. 6 Arizona State later in the afternoon. In the first quarter, junior utility Annie Kutt was the first Aggie to put a point on the scoreboard, followed by Virgil at the two-minute mark; however, those efforts were not enough to keep up with the powerhouse Sun Devils, who held an eight-goal advantage over No. 10 UC Davis after the second quarter. The Sun Devils continued to outscore the Aggies throughout the remainder of the game to eventually conclude the matchup at a 14-5 score.

The UC Davis women's water polo team returns to the pool tomorrow morning, where they will start their second and final day at the Triton Invitational going up against host and No. 15(t) UC San Diego in the Triton Pool at 9:50 a.m.
