DAVIS, Calif. - Senior wide receiver Keelan Doss and junior tight end Wesley Preece earned Preseason All-America accolades from HERO Sports when the outlet released its list of award recipients on Tuesday. When announced, the pair earned spots on the first and second teams, respectively.
This is the latest award for Doss, last year’s national finalist for the Walter Payton Award and consensus All-American. During his breakout season, the junior sociology major also collected Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year and first team All-Big Sky recognition by finishing with 115 receptions and 1,499 receiving yards — both career highs and new all-time program records.
In addition to leading the conference in receptions per game (10.5) and receiving yards per game (136.3), the Alameda native set another school record by posting 100 or more receiving yards on nine occasions.
When the Aggies’ 2017 season concluded, Doss ranked No. 1 in the nation among all Division I FBS and FCS players in three categories: receiving yards, receiving yards per game, and receptions per game (10.5). He held top marks among all Division I players in the country throughout the last five weeks of the season in each of these categories; by consistently performing at an elite level last year, the top FBS players in each category trailed Doss’ final numbers by 154 total receiving yards, 16.6 receiving yards and 1.4 receptions per game.
Also posting attention-grabbing numbers throughout a career-best season of his own, Preece quickly made a name for himself when he caught three touchdown passes in his team’s Big Sky opener vs. North Dakota, one of a slew of teams the Aggies faced in 2017 that advanced to postseason play the previous year.
Including his two versus the Mustangs, which helped UC Davis defeat Cal Poly in last season’s Battle for the Golden Horseshoe in front of a packed Aggie Stadium on Homecoming Weekend, Preece scored a touchdown in five of his team’s last six games.
The Rocklin native, who is majoring in managerial economics, ended his sophomore season with a team-high nine TDs, finished second in scoring with 54 points — the fifth-highest total among all Big Sky players — and 36 receptions for 568 yards.
Shortly after the season concluded, Preece earned All-Big Sky honors (third team) for the first time in his career and Big Sky All-Academic recognition for the second time in as many seasons.
UC Davis will kick-off the 2018 season on Aug. 30 at San José State before hosting San Diego on Sept. 8 in the first of five home games taking place at Aggie Stadium. With numerous players earning national honors, a slew of new program records and the league's top offense (for the first time in program history), UC Davis enjoyed its most successful season in the Big Sky in 2017 -- the first year of the Dan Hawkins era.
