AUSTIN, Texas -- UC Davis graduate student Jon Horvath makes the 2017-2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America Division I Cross Country/Track and Field Team with first-team status, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday afternoon.
Horvath, a neurobiology, physiology, and behavior major with a perfect 4.0 GPA, has become the first UC Davis cross country runner to receive First Team status, and the fourth to make the All-America list since UC Davis joined the Division I scene. Prior to Horvath, the three Aggies that were awarded with All-America titles are as follows: Will Merchad (Third Team, 2005), Scott Himmelberger (Third Team, 2010), Trevor Halsted (Third Team, 2014; Second Team, 2015).
Out of 46 student-athletes, the Roseville, California, native was one among 23 honorees on the men's side to record a GPA of 4.0 or better.
The distance runner finished the cross country season with the second fastest Aggie time for half of the meets he participated in. He started off the season with a third-place finish overall in the Aggie Open's 6K, finishing just four seconds short of his career-best time, while placing within the top 25 in the next two following meets. At the Big West Conference Championships, he crossed the line in 50th with a 26:24.7 8K time before rounding out the season at the NCAA West Regionals with a 10K time of 32:40.8.
Graduate student Trey Culver, a sports management major with a 4.0 GPA from Texas Tech University, was named the Men's Academic All-America of the Year winner, while Lynne Mooradian of the United State Military Academy, who carries a 4.23 GPA in mechanical engineering, was the women's winner for this award.
The Google Cloud Academic All-America program is administered the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and voted on by its members. Eligible candidates must be a key contributor and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
